Advanced Technical Japanese Courses

Intended Audience

Engineers and scientists who gather scientific and technical information from Japanese sources, or who wish to follow research and development activities in Japan. Participants should have studied Japanese for at least three years.

Japanese Economy

Japanese for Business and Industry

Students read from recent Japanese books, magazines, and newspapers on topics such as the structure of the Japanese economy, Japanese corporations and their activities, and the relationship between government and business in Japan.

Advanced Technology

Advanced Technical Japanese Seminar

Students read current technical articles from Japanese journals. (Topics include computers, electronics, and advanced materials.) Supplementary readings are taken from recent Japanese technical books. Topics and readings vary yearly.

Research and Development

Research in Japanese Technical Literature

Students select a scientific or technical topic and explore the recent literature on that topic in Japanese. Course activities focus on searching through the Japanese literature, scanning titles, detailed reading of primary literature, and preparing translations or abstracts of specific documents. In the process students will create specialized glossaries of technical terms in their chosen field. The final outcome will be a review article that summarizes the information obtained.
