Additional Opportunities

In addition to the Master of Engineering in Technical Japanese the University of Wisconsin-Madison offers a certificate program in technical Japanese. The certificate program provides an alternative for professionals and students needing to develop technical Japanese skills and knowledge but not wishing to formalize their studies with an advanced degree.

All technical Japanese courses offered by the UW-Madison focus on translating and understanding Japanese printed materials and audiovisual materials. These courses stress the technical vocabulary not found in courses that emphasize literature or conversation.

Students learn to read (with the aid of a dictionary) Japanese technical documents and specifications, product manuals, brochures, patents and memos. Strategies for reading and analyzing the flow of ideas are reinforced through regular assignments and daily feedback from an experienced instructor.

Certificate in Technical Japanese Studies

The certificate program* option helps technical professionals and students gain reading and translation skills in technical Japanese and conversational ability in modern, colloquial Japanese. In order to receive the certificate a student must complete a minimum of 18 credits in approved courses related to Japanese language and Japanese technological progress.
